-Cedar Bluff AARP Chapter Celebrates 30th Birthday
Contributed by: William Schall on 1/19/2008

Knoxville-Cedar Bluff Chapter of AARP recognized the 30th anniversary of its charter at its regular January lunch meeting Thursday, January 17, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan. About 100 members and guests attended. To celebrate the milestone, founding member Jeanne Fox first related a history of the two-year effort to establish the chapter. The late Kitty Blake Sherper led the effort to organize the affiliate. At that time, AARP required 100 members to issue a charter, and by the fall of 1977 the West Knox County group had enrolled 102 persons. Besides Ms. Fox, there are two other charter members still active in the AARP group-Ms. Nadine Alexander and Ms. Bessie Keller. The chapter now has more than 160 members. Following the history lesson, Margot Seay, Tennessee state president of AARP, congratulated the chapter for its achievements and reminded the members that founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus coined the motto "to serve not to be served" to guide the group. Now boasting 730,000 volunteer members in Tennessee and 38 million members nationwide, the non-partisan group advocates financial security and good health care for all Americans at both state and federal levels. Ms. Seay read a letter from AARP chief executive William D. Novelli and president Eric D. Olsen who wrote "we are grateful for the efforts of your chapter's leaders and members over the past thirty years to achieve the goals of AARP in your community." The national leaders added that "by pooling your talents and experience, partnering with your AARP state office and promoting the active engagement of your neighbors, you are giving back to society, accomplishing the mission of our association and leaving a rich legacy for those who will follow you." Ms. Seay concluded her remarks with the presentation of a plaque to chapter president William Schall that says in part "in appreciation and recognition of 30 years of service to AARP, its members and the community." Mr. Schall thanked the state AARP president on behalf of the chapter. The birthday fete was completed by folk singer Katie Shaw, who sang some old Scottish ballads both a cappella and accompanied on her dulcimer. AARP is a national non-partisan organization that advocates issues affecting older citizens. Its Tennessee state affiliate in Nashville has 730,000 members, and there are 12 chapters in East Tennessee. Its latest focus is "Divided We Fail", a multi-year effort to stress the importance of health care and financial security for all citizens.
